For Chinese text, character count is often the practical limit used by forms, publishing systems and social platforms. In mixed writing, report Chinese characters separately and also count Latin words, numbers and identifiers that are separated by spaces or punctuation.
When to use each number
Use character count when a platform specifies a Chinese-character limit. Use word count for English assignments, reading-time estimates and bilingual briefs where the recipient asks for words. When the requirement is unclear, provide both numbers.
